The Weeknd Bailed on VMAs Because He Didn't Feel Like Performing

The Weeknd was notably absent from Sunday night's sleepy MTV Video Music Awards. And "fatigue" is reportedly to blame.

TMZ reported Monday the singer "just didn’t feel like" performing, despite being one of the first confirmed names and having been nominated for four awards. Citing sources close to the singer, the website said The Weeknd was feeling a bad case of "concert fatigue" from his tour.

His no-show perhaps wasn't a complete surprise. He also canceled a private pre-VMAs show on Friday night, with guests notified just two hours beforehand of the cancellation. His team blamed "production issues," but Variety reported the proper permits were never acquired.

Last night's VMAs were relatively light on fanfare, with just a handful of big names taking the stage, including host Katy Perry, Video of the Year winner Kendrick Lamar, Miley Cyrus, Ed Sheeran, Lorde, Thirty Seconds to Mars and Lil Uzi Vert. Up-and-comers such as Alessia Cara, KYLE, Cardi B, Julia Michaels and others were also on hand.

A rep for The Weeknd declined to comment.
