Portair is offering a new glimpse of his upcoming debut album, Gathering Dust, with his new single “Loved By You,” featuring acclaimed singer-songwriter Joy Williams.
The Australian-born, Berlin-based artist shared the new song on Friday along with news that he'll release Gathering Dust on Dec. 4, with the record reflecting a period of major change in his life. “The music is a reflection of what I’ve experienced,” says Portair. “I moved countries, lost friends, lost relationships, and discovered new ones. I went through a pretty bad battle with depression and came out much better on the other side.”
That emotional journey is at the center of the stirring “Loved By You,” which explores the uncertainty of whether to remain in a relationship or walk away. “It came from exploring the feeling of losing the ability to be loved by someone whilst fighting the push and pull of figuring out whether to stay or to leave,” Portair explains. He says working with Williams was “one of those rare collaborations where everything just clicked.”
Williams, one half of longtime Variance favorite duo The Civil Wars and a past collaborator with Taylor Swift and The National, says she immediately connected with the song’s central question. “Working on ‘Loved By You’ together felt like diving into an age-old question so many of us have asked in relationships before: ‘do I stay or do I go?’” she says. “Sometimes the instinct comes quickly. Other times, the answer to that question can slowly, painfully emerge over time.”
“Loved By You” is out now, while Gathering Dust arrives Dec. 4. Watch the video below.
