Sunday night's 2017 Screen Actors Guild Awards included a few surprises, but mostly met expectations.
Emma Stone (La La Land) and Denzel Washington (Fences) took home the wins for Female Actor and Male Actor in a Leading Role, respectively, in the film categories. Meanwhile, Washington's co-star Viola Davis won Female Actress in a Supporting Role and Moonlight's Mahershala Ali nabbed the Male Actor in a Supporting Role.
Later in the night, the cast of Hidden Figures claimed victory for the big prize, Cast in a Motion Picture, following weeks of incredible buzz and triumphs at the box office. Most industry insiders had predicted Moonlight might have won in the Cast category.
In television, Veep's Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Shameless's William H. Macy scored predictable wins for Lead Roles in a Comedy Series. But Netflix had a number of big, perhaps less expected wins for The Crown, with John Lithgow and Claire Foy winning Male and Female Actor in a Drama Series, respectively. And the cast of freshman breakout Stranger Things earned the win for Ensemble in a Drama Series.
