While Donald Trump was thrusting himself into the spotlight of the NFL national anthem debate, Jennifer Lopez was acknowledging millions suffering in Puerto Rico.
The singer-actress announced Sunday she is personally donating $1 million to recovery efforts after Hurricane Irma and Maria, which have left the island devastated as millions are without power, likely for months, and large swaths of the U.S. territory uninhabitable.
Lopez made the announcement during a press conference with New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who announced today his state is organizing a recovery plan to help Puerto Rico.
"We have to help Puerto Rico with the same urgency that we're helping Texas and Florida and the other parts of this country that need help," Cuomo said.
Lopez, who is of Puerto Rican descent and was born in the Bronx, said she still hasn't been able to make contact with all of her family in Puerto Rico. Speaking in Spanish and in English, she urged the public not to forget about the island.
“Lives have been lost. Power is down across the entire island,” she said. “More than 15,000 people have been forced into shelters, and the storm has devastated the lives of thousands of others.”
As we previously reported, Tidal has confirmed plans for a concert next month which would benefit victims of the recent hurricanes and earthquakes.
