It appears Donald Glover (aka Childish Gambino) wasn't joking last month when he took to social media begging to be bought out of his existing contract with indie label Glassnote Records.
“I talked to some majors,” Gambino told MTV over the weekend. “It’s really about sitting down, figuring out what they can offer.”
Despite the label's success with the likes of Mumford and Sons, Phoenix and CHVRCHES, Gambino has faced multiple bumps in his relationship with the company, both preceding and following the release of last year's Because the Internet. His frustration spiked a few weeks ago when the label apparently botched a "Sweatpants" video rollout.
"It wasn't handled correctly." Gambino previously said of the video error. "We were told a lot of things were gonna happen and they were all lies. So I'm done. Someone buy me out of this contract [with Glassnote Records]."
The rapper has reportedly been approached by the likes of Def Jam and Atlantic. And while he says he's "on the fence" about his next move, he said a significant factor is radio airplay, an area Glassnote hasn't emphasized. "You don’t spread without the help of radio,” he said. "Radio still holds a very special place with people. Radio is like a major thing I feel like [major] labels still know how to do well.”
