Green Day returned Thursday with a new single "Bang Bang," the first preview of their new album Revolution Radio, which will be released on Oct. 7.

The broiling cut is inspired by recent events and written from the perspective of a mass shooter. “It’s about the culture of mass shooting that happens in America mixed with narcissistic social media,” frontman Billie Joe Armstrong said of the track. “There’s this sort of rage happening, but it’s also now being filmed and we all have ourselves under surveillance.”

The 12-track album was produced by the band and recorded in Oakland. It's said to be a "blitz of angst-ridden anthems ... with lyrical themes that address the complexities and uncertainties of modern-day existence."

Of the album, Armstrong said in a statement it is a "movement for lost souls to come together... dance together... sing together... and most of all, find each other. That's what the spirit of Green Day has been about since day one."

Listen to "Bang Bang" below and stay tuned for tour dates, which are forthcoming.
