MOMO.’s eighth album, Tum Tum Tum, feels like the work of an artist who has stopped worrying about where he belongs. Instead, it embraces the idea that belonging can exist in movement itself. Having lived across multiple continents and absorbed countless musical influences along the way, the London-based Brazilian musician approaches songwriting with a perspective that is both deeply personal and impossible to pin to a single place.
Recorded live with a band that has spent years developing its chemistry, Tum Tum Tum thrives on interaction. The opening track “Egum Eô” introduces the record with a sense of ritual and connection, drawing on themes of ancestry and continuity before giving way to songs that explore childhood, memory, love, resilience and acceptance. Across the album, MOMO. repeatedly returns to the idea that life is shaped by forces larger than ourselves, whether that means family histories, cultural traditions or the passage of time.
What makes the record particularly compelling is its ability to hold contrasting emotions in the same space. The vibrant imagery found throughout songs such as "Vermelho e Rosa" celebrates simple moments of wonder and playfulness, while "Dream of Samba" reflects on the distance between childhood dreams and adult reality. Elsewhere, "Morena" arrives with effortless warmth, using its gentle groove to explore the balance between pleasure and hardship that defines everyday existence. The presence of celebrated collaborators adds colour to the album, but never distracts from its central voice.
That balance continues throughout the second half of the record. "Dente D’ouro" wrestles with ideas of strength and vulnerability, pairing determination with moments of tenderness, while "Tudo que Se Tem" finds beauty in intimacy and shared experience. The bilingual "Canto de Aldeia" stands out as one of the album’s most vivid moments, capturing memories of community, family and childhood freedom through a lens that feels both personal and universal.
By the time “Tranquilo” closes the album, MOMO. has arrived somewhere profound. The song turns its attention towards stillness, suggesting that meaning is often found not in grand achievements but in everyday moments that are easy to overlook. Tum Tum Tum finds its strength in patience, curiosity and human connection. Twenty years into his recording career, MOMO. sounds less interested in chasing trends than in deepening a musical language that continues to evolve with every release. The result is a record that feels rich with experience, yet remarkably light on its feet.
