Simon and the Island has just dropped a trio of songs, satisfying our appetites with his delicious aural candy. You may recognize Simon Ward from The Strumbellas, where the band garnered international acclaim for their hit song “Spirits.” Now taking time to focus on his solo project, Ward presents three songs off of his upcoming album which is slated for release Nov. 19. Giving us just a taste of what to expect, he debuts his solo sound and to put it plainly… you won’t be disappointed.
The first track “Muse” is a beautiful declaration of love. The passionate and heartfelt delivery sees the songwriter confiding his feelings, as he confesses, “Oh my god, I know you’re struggling and oh my god, I know you’ll love again. I’ll take your side. No matter what you do. You’ll be my muse.” The accompanying music video is a hypnotic presentation of sand art, created by James Sun. The calming visuals perfectly complement the sonic nature of the track and as the story slowly unravels, we see an image which reflects the meaning behind each lyric.
“Miss Maples” emits a subtle country twang, with simple acoustic guitars, warm piano melodies and mellow percussion setting the backdrop for his colorful, storytelling lyrics. The song narrates the burning desire to reconnect with a loved one and the need to be in their presence. A particularly relatable song, as the past year has seen people unable to meet with their friends and families, for months on end.
“Scared Of Not Knowing” is entirely captivating. Showcasing Ward’s impressive vocal range, his velvet tone drapes over the twinkling string arrangements. The entirety of this triple release is totally compelling. Somewhat melancholy, yet alluring, as Ward pulls us in with each and every word. We’re looking forward to hearing what else is up his sleeve with this upcoming album.
