There's plenty to lament about the current state of the world, but today we get a new album from My Morning Jacket, and that's just incredible.

The new album The Waterfall II is the sequel or second half of their record The Waterfall, which was released in 2015. The Kentucky-bred outfit had apparently been sitting on the new material and was inspired to finish it and release it during the lockdown.

According to frontman Jim James, during the early days of self-isolation this spring, he was out on a walk and put his music library to play on shuffle, which included the song "Spinning My Wheels," the opening track of the new opening. With lyrics about feeling "hypnotized from doing the same old thing," it seemed newly relevant and prompted James to dive into the tracks from their Panoramic House sessions.

Like its predecessor, The Waterfall II is heavy at times, as it's clearly inspired by heartache and turmoil, reflective of James' own battles but it still carries his distinct message: "There is hope beyond the pain and loss, if you learn to flow with life like water."

The album premiered Thursday night in a listening party the band hosted on Facebook and YouTube, before it officially arrived on streaming platforms. It is also available for pre-order in standard and deluxe versions on 180-gram vinyl with Zoetrope labels in a gatefold foil jacket. CD and vinyl copies will be released on Aug. 28.
