After years working behind the scenes as a songwriter, newcomer H. Kenneth is ready to step into the spotlight.

The Nashville singer has delivered an early listen of his debut single "Now & Then," which is premiering today on Variance with its accompanying set of visuals and is a preview of H. Kenneth's upcoming album. And while the song instantly sounds whimsical and upbeat, it's actually inspired by a breakup.

"'It's about how it feels to be left alone by someone you thought was 'the one,'" he says of the new track. "Being blindsided by the breakup of a seemingly perfect relationship and being told by everyone you know that 'time heals all wounds.' But as time progresses, that combination of love and hurt just become a numb feeling that leaves you wondering if you'll ever be able to truly love somebody else. The video is a metaphorical take on what it feels like in the wake of the loss."

Having previously written for the likes of Nightly and Chord Overstreet, including top 40 songwriting credits, H. Kenneth's upcoming record This Is a Journal is out on Aug. 31.

While "Now & Then" is officially out this Friday (Aug. 3), check out the video below.

@Ricky Love: The typo that makes your sentence now read "I’m his future." is the best thing about your pathetic insult.

I have been a fan of his for awhile. Through other bands and combinations he is a master of the sly word and is deceptively simple in his personna. Now & Then is very much in his wheelhouse. Sounds light and and pop-oriented but the words are much deeper and the visuals ironic. Loved this.
