Even in the year 2014, Nickelback is still ruining lives.

According to the Coeur D'Alene Press, two men in Idaho were apparently stopped by police officers who misheard them ranting about Nickelback at a gas station and immediately assumed them had said, "nickel sack"—a reference to marijuana.

The confrontation got rather ugly, with the officers acting aggressively and escalating the matter, even after the men tried repeatedly to explain that someone in another car was blasting that awful band's music. One of the men was eventually handcuffed because he was "being an asshole," according to one of the deputies, who called the Nickelback explanation a "bullshit story."

To put into perspective just how much time and resources are clearly wasted on the so-called "war on drugs," a nickel sack is considered by many to be half a gram of weed (or $5 worth). As Mediaite points out, possession with intent to distribute in Idaho is punishable by up to five years or a maximum $15,000 fine.

Although the men's story clearly checked out, since they were not charged or arrested, judging by the video they captured during the police confrontation (seen below), you'd think they had just robbed a bank.

Lt. Stu Miller of the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office said the incident is “being internally investigated," adding: “We take this type of thing very seriously and we tell our people all the time to do their job as though someone is always watching, and they are always watching.”
