Colombian born, Los Angeles based artist Martí recently unveiled his new single “See You Again (Volverte a Ver)” as he yearns for someone to fill the space that his ex left behind in their devastating wake. The bilingual artist fuses Latin elements with his love of pop and EDM to create something fresh and spicy, welcoming listeners into his unique world. Martí’s music often speaks openly and honestly about vulnerable moments in his life, covering everything from his experiences being a young gay immigrant man in Los Angeles, to his relationship escapades.
Variance spoke with Martí about his new single, his struggles with anxiety and depression and upcoming plans.
Hey, Martí. Congratulations on the release of your new single “See You Again (Volverte a Ver).” How would you sum up the song in just 3 words?
Longing, delusional and horny
“See You Again (Volverte a Ver)” looks back on a time where you were trying to fill the void after a difficult breakup. Can you tell us more about this and if there is anything you would like the listener to take away from the song?
I was going out and romanticizing any and every interaction and hookup I had because I really needed to take my mind off him. This song started out about one specific guy who I thought I wanted something more with but truthfully I was just bored and hurting, this kept happening though so it’s really about a chunk of my life. The takeaway is, it’s ok to romanticize things and try out new experiences but you’re going to have to deal with the problem eventually….
You’ve mentioned how your songwriting often touches on your struggles with anxiety and depression. Is it easy to open up about personal and vulnerable situations in your life and do you find songwriting is therapeutic for you?
I am an open book and I have always been but that can also have its downsides. I sometimes voice my feelings without fully feeling them and letting the situation affect me which leads to me being in denial about my anxiety or depression because I sought out someone else’s opinion before creating my own, writing does alleviate that.
Do you have any funny memories or stand out moments from the writing/recording of “See You Again (Volverte a Ver)”?
The song you used to have more a reggaeton beat which I loved but didn’t fit as well. I remember when we changed it to what it has now it was like a big aha moment.
Born in Columbia and now currently living in Los Angeles, your music is written in both Spanish and English. How important is it for you to honor your heritage in your music?
I left Colombia when I was 3 and didn’t return until I was 13, since then I’ve gone almost every year. I think it’s pretty important for me to write in Spanish because it’s a way of expressing myself that is really true to my core and it’s healing and makes me feel really connected to where I’m from.
Your music takes inspiration from many different genres, as well as Latin music. Are there any artists from Colombia in particular that have influenced your sound or that you recommend our readers should check out?
The artist is called Shakira, just kidding, well yes listen to Shakira but also, Feid, Carlos Vives, Karol G, Juanes, there’s so many!!
If you could collaborate with any artist, dead or alive, who would it be and why?
Probably Doja Cat or Shakira, I love them.
What’s next for Martí?
Well my next single "So are you over me?" is coming very soon so please check that out!
