Australian born, London based singer, songwriter and visionaire Ebony Buckle has just unveiled her marvelous and mythical album, Disco Lasers. The enchanting 11-track release explores a multitude of all things weird and wonderful, from lonely whales, to alien invasions. Showing us the deepest corners of her colorful imagination, Buckle leaves no stone unturned, resulting in Disco Lasers being one of the captivating albums of this year. Combining ethereal soundscapes with twinkling arrangements and Buckle’s haunting vocals, this album will suck you in from the very first note.

The entirety of 2021 saw the songwriter dropping single by single, slowly unpeeling the layers to her universe and giving each song it’s time to shine. With each month came a new release, always accompanied by a whimsical music video, as well as poetry and newsletters for her most dedicated fans. Now, with the whole album available to truly sink your teeth into, we get to examine the music and all of it’s fascinating topics.

It’s evident that Buckle finds inspiration for her songs from the things that intrigue her on a day to day basis. Take “The Plant Who Believed” for example - a song which stems from an article she read in New Scientist magazine. Speaking of a planet who believed she was a star, she explains, “I think so many of us find ourselves in a situation we thought we had understood, only to find out it is vastly different and very much out of our control.”

Then there is the fantastical “Immortal” which was written after the Aussie woke up after a dream where she was a God. Buckle admits, “As a child, I was obsessed with Greek and Roman mythology and so this must have crept into my subconscious somewhere.”

Soaking up the environment around her and seeking creativity in everything she does, “Wild Woman” was inspired by a quote from the book “Women who run with the Wolves” by Clarissa Pinkola Estes and “Who Remembers” starts with an actual NASA audio recording of a storm on Jupiter. For an album which covers seemingly niche themes, it appears that there is actually something for everyone, providing an interesting listening experience which will keep you thinking.
