Foo Fighters' Dave Grohl at Fiserv Forum, by Dan DeSlover

Many fans returned to the Fiserv Forum on Wednesday, following an exhilarating performance by Metallica on Tuesday night, to partake in another near-capacity show by the Foo Fighters. Frontman Dave Grohl was one of those, who seemed to enjoy Metallica’s show as much as those who doubled-down for both events. Their successful Concrete and Gold tour wraps up Thursday night in Minneapolis and the band will take some much deserved time off heading into the holidays. Aussie indie rockers Gang of Youths opened the show.

Given the solid one-two punch of Metallica and Foo Fighters, it was hard not to compare the two shows. Where Metallica offered a meticulous production combined with technical and razor-sharp musicianship, Grohl and company turned the Fiserv Forum upside down with their genuine personality and frenetic stage presence. It was a party from the onset and it didn’t stop until the band and fans alike were equally spent more than two-and-a-half hours later.

Heads banged with fists raised high for anthems “These Days” and “Best of You,” then Grohl and drummer Taylor Hawkins switched roles for Queen’s “Under Pressure.” They also teased Nugent’s “Cat Scratch Fever,” segueing its signature riff into a mashup on “All My Life” complete with a cowbell solo that prompted the affable front man to quip, “You know the tour’s almost over when we’re doing cowbell solos.” Mainstays “Everlong” and the uplifting “My Hero” closed out the set proper. Though they constantly teased the show would continue well into the night, they returned for a three song encore that bookended “Monkey Wrench” and “Best of You” with a heartfelt cover of the late Tom Petty hit, “Breakdown.”
