As the Spotify debate wages on, Aloe Blacc has added another voice in the form of a blistering op-ed Wednesday morning.
The "Wake Me Up!" singer sided with Taylor Swift, who this week removed her entire catalog from the streaming platform. He explained that her decision should cause music professionals and fans alike "to stand up and take note."
As a fellow songwriter, Blacc relayed his own experience with streaming, explaining that "it takes roughly one million spins on Pandora for a songwriter to earn just $90." He went on to reveal that his massive hit with Avicii "Wake Me Up!" (Spotify's most-streamed song of 2013 and still the 13th most played song on Pandora) had earned him less than $4,000 from Pandora.
In the letter, Blacc called for an update to "the nation’s antiquated music licensing system" and he urged fans to buy albums they love and for streaming services to reform how music creators are compensated.
