After gracing the Soul Train Music Awards stage, Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter BJ The Chicago Kid chatted with Variance's Ethan Ijumba about his latest album, Gravy.

The 15-track project boasts an impressive line-up of features, including Earth, Wind & Fire’s very own Phillip Bailey, Robert Glasper, Andra Day, Chlöe Bailey, Coco Jones, Freddie Gibbs, Cory Henry, and The Indications.

BJ gives intel on how the conception of his album and what it means to him at the point where he’s at throughout his discography. The quality of music on Gravy is the conceptual refinement BJ has been working on since releasing his 2016 debut album In My Mind. The Chicago native goes back to his souled-out roots, highlighting fresh takes on classic sounds to provide a vintage foundation. He aims to re-establish the archetype of soul music while giving a nod to his hometown funk, jazz, and blues.

In the hopes of securing the legacy of soul music, his album propels us back to the era of real musicianship, conscious lyrics, and synthesized productions. Be sure to follow Variance on the platforms below for more music news and updates.
