Following a polarized reaction to Lauryn Hill's "Neurotic Society (Compulsory Mix)" earlier this month, the track is now under the microscope once again. The song, which criticizes current social pitfalls, is now being analyzed for seeming to suggest anti-gay undertones, according to critics.
Monica Miller of BET is now hypothesizing that perhaps the prison-bound artist's lyrics about ”drag queens,” "girl men" and ”social transvestism" are actually taking aim at the LGBT community.
Andrew Belonsky of OUT Magazine (via Huffington Post), however, has questioned whether Hill's "drag queens" lyric is about anti-gay pride and whether her reference to "social transvestism" is actually a jab at the Catholic Church.
A portion of Hill's lyrics:
We're living in a joke time, metaphorical coke time
commerce and girl men
run the whole world men
bold drunken debauchery...
Quick scam and drag queens
real life's been blasphemed
