Well, it's officially official. JAY Z's newest album, Magna Carta Holy Grail, debuts this week at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart. According to Nielsen SoundScan, the set sold 527,000 copies in its first week of availability.
While not much of a surprise, it did manage to surpass expectations. It's also now the second-highest debut week of 2013, leading Daft Punk's Random Access Memories, which bowed at No. 1 in May with 339,000. Justin Timberlake's The 20/20 Experience still leads with its 968,000 start and no foreseeable competitor in sight as of yet. Maybe his own Vol. 2 of 20/20?
As we previous pointed out, this marks a very interesting week for rap music. With Magna Carta's No. 1 debut, following three previous rap No. 1s (Kanye West's Yeezus, Wale's The Gifted and J. Cole's Born Sinner), this is the first time four different rap albums have consecutively held the top slot.
As another part of history, this is now Jay's 13th No. 1 record. No other solo artist has more No. 1 albums; Bruce Springsteen and Elvis Presley each have 10.
