David Bowie, one of music's most iconic and legendary performers, has died, according to a representative for the singer.

According to a statement, Bowie "died peacefully today [Sunday] surrounded by his family after a courageous 18 month battle with cancer. While many of you will share in this loss, we ask that you respect the family’s privacy during their time of grief."

The heartbreaking news arrives two days after the singer's 69th birthday, which also marked the release of his new album Blackstar.

Bowie's social media pages have subsequently been updated with confirmation of his passing.
