Hippo Campus is getting ready to release a new album.
The St. Paul, Minnesota outfit on Thursday shared "Bambi," the title track from the upcoming album, which is out Sept. 28. It comes with a video directed by Kyle Sauer.
The new music comes as the band has experienced a number of changes over their five year history. "We were in high school and the main idea was, 'Let's start a band and make our friends dance,'" says bassist Zach Sutton, recalling the band's origins. "There was no real context to what we were doing—it was just total creative joy."
Regarding the new song, singer Jake Luppen says: "'Bambi' was the last song added to the record and potentially the most elusive. We wrote the original idea in our practice space with a drum machine, op-1, guitar and rhodes. We sat with session for several months before we had the major melodic breakthroughs. The lyrics deal with the challenges of being a friend to those around you when your mental health is getting in the way."
