The 1975 Hints at 'Goodbye' in Cryptic Comic Strip

British pop outfit The 1975 on Sunday shared a comic strip-like image on social media informing fans, "The hardest part of any relationship is to say goodbye … So we must leave, with a parting 'we love you.'"

The band had been teasing some kind of revelation for June 1, but an end to the band or even a hiatus had not been expected, considering the Matty Healy-led quartet has been in the studio recently working on their sophomore album.

While the social media post leaves much to be interpreted, some fans are insisting the band isn't breaking up but is instead evolving, perhaps ditching their popular black-and-white aesthetic, as suggested by a drawing of Healy wearing pink in the aforementioned comic strip.

It's worth noting Healy's Instagram version of the comic strip appears in front of a bright pink background, while the text also suggests the foursome "must reclaim our identity [and] repossess our control of it."

When we first talked to Healy in 2013, he discussed his obsession with John Hughes' 1986 film Pretty in Pink: "It's not necessarily stylistically something that we've tried to parallel ... It's that kind of nostalgic, kind of life-affirming, not overly romantic vibe that those movies have and it's something we wanted to capture in our record."

A rep for the band did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Update: The band's social media pages have been deleted as of early Monday morning U.K. time.

As of June 1, the band has reactivated its social media accounts, replacing its profile picture with blank pink squares. Thus, the evolution.
