It must be 2014, because a Japanese hologram was David Letterman's musical guest last night on Late Show.

The animated character, named Hatsune Miku, is a big pop star in Japan. And she made her American television debut Wednesday on the CBS late night program.

Miku, who is voiced by a singing synthesizer, has previously opened for Lady Gaga overseas. She will also perform this week at an expo in New York, which explains the appearance on Late Show.

As for Letterman, he seemed both spooked and amused by the performance on his show, taking the stage as he usually does following the musical performance to close the show: "OK, there she is," he said. "It's like being on Willie Nelson's bus."
