Disney's new The Lion King film arrives Thursday in theaters and with it comes a new soundtrack, including a new song by Beyoncé, who voices the character of Nala.
"Spirit" comes in addition to Bey's remake of "Can You Feel the Love Tonight," a collaboration with Donald Glover, who voices Simba. The full soundtrack, titled The Lion King: The Gift, is coming July 19, along with the movie itself, but "Spirit" is out today.
"This is a new experience of storytelling. I wanted to do more than find a collection of songs that were inspired by the film," said Beyoncé, who also curated and produced the soundtrack. "It is a mixture of genres and collaboration that isn’t one sound. It is influenced by everything from R&B, pop, hip hop and Afro Beat."
While "Spirit" might not realize Beyoncé's full potential and is most certainly a very Disney ballad with its gospel chorus underpinning, it's clearly already an Oscar contender. And perhaps that is the song's real foundation.
