In an unprecedented move, Netflix has quietly acquired Cloverfield sequel The Cloverfield Pardox and is releasing the film after the end of Sunday's Super Bowl LII.
The first trailer actually dropped during the big game without advanced notice, with the only reports in the past couple of weeks suggesting Netflix the project would be moving from Paramount to Netflix.
While there was no formal announcement before tonight, Oscar-nominated film director Ava DuVernay definitely teased something big hours before: "#FilmTwitter is going to explode tonight," she tweeted. "Something is coming that I can hardly believe. Lawd. History in the making."
Directed by Julius Onah, the film's cast includes David Oyelowo, Ziyi Zhang, Daniel Bruhl, Elizabeth Debicki and Gugu Mbatha-Raw.
As DuVernay also pointed out, the flick is premiering without "advance press [or] ads." Although the Super Bowl trailer itself only promises the film is arriving "very soon," a rep for Netflix has since confirmed to Variance that Paradox is indeed premiering tonight.
