Independence Day came a week late for Azealia Banks, who told fans Thursday on Twitter that she is "about to get out of my deal" with Universal.
As we previously reported, the singer said last month has been hoping to "completely transcend this kitschy female rap scene I've been a [part] of & move [into] bigger, more relevant social territories."
On Thursday, however, Banks tweeted, "Now I get to be the cool indie chick I imagined I would be when I was 14," declaring she was "free at last" and comparing herself to Miss Celie in The Color Purple.
The news follows what's been a well-documented, roller coaster relationship between the singer and Universal.
What she does next remains to be seen, although without a major label calling the shots, perhaps her long-delayed debut album, Broke with Expensive Taste, may finally see the light of day.
