The Force was definitely awakened over the weekend, as the new Star Wars film shattered both the U.S. domestic and global box office numbers with the largest opening weekend ever.

According to updated tallies, Star Wars: The Force Awakens racked in $248 million in the U.S., handily surpassing Jurassic World's impressive $208.8 million record from last summer.

With $528 million globally, the film also exceeded Jurassic's 2014 worldwide benchmark of $524.9 million. It also breaks the record for December U.S. releases, previously set by The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey in 2012 with its $84.6 million opening weekend.

It remains to be seen if The Force Awakens might topple Avatar's $760 million record for the biggest U.S. box office total. Most films traditionally dip in subsequent weeks, but the Star Wars franchise is definitely not like most films.
