Net Neutrality Wins—For Now

The FCC voted 3-2 on Thursday to reclassify ISPs as Title II utilities, essentially preventing providers such as Comcast and Verizon from restricting Internet speeds or giving certain websites or services preferential treatment.

That means regardless of whether someone's browsing cat gifs, watching Netflix, listening to Soundcloud or reading their ex's Tumblr, they'll have equal access to any or all of those platforms.

“The internet is simply too important to allow broadband providers to be the ones making the rules," FCC chairman Tom Wheeler said during Thursday's meeting.

As TheNextWeb points out, Verizon and AT&T have already threatened to challenge the decision.

Update: Verizon's full response, which describes the new rules as being "written in the era of the steam locomotive and the telegraph," can be read here.
