'Selfie' Beats Out 'Twerk' as Oxford's Word of the Year; Miley Cyrus Still Wins

Oxford Dictionaries announced Tuesday that the Word of the Year for 2013 is "selfie," beating out other popular terms such as the omnipresent "twerk," "bitcoin" and "binge-watch," all phrasings popularized due to social media and technology.

According to the Oxford Dictionaries editors, the use of "selfie" (aka a self-portrait) has increased by a whopping 17,000 percent since the same time last year.

As Oxford points out, the word has evolved from a social media buzzword to mainstream use over the last 12 months. And while many would have presumed "twerk" to easily top the list, it appears Miley Cyrus (largely credited with popularizing the term in recent months) wins anyway, as she's also arguably the selfie queen.

Last year's Word of the Year was "gif," thanks to last year's resurgence of the image format.
