Having been born into a family of classical musicians, The Auxiliary (a.k.a Russell Howard), was always destined to follow their musical footsteps. Growing up, he would dabble with different genres, trying to establish his true sound and one which wouldn’t restrict him. His debut single “Overture” is the result of his exploration into a unique sonic universe. Fusing spine-tingling electronic soundscapes, with eerie iridescent vocals, The Auxiliary executes an atmospheric tune, which captivates you from the very first note. Built upon seemingly minimal and muted instrumentation, “Overture” is the epitome of less is more. With a wash of shimmering synths, the track very gradually builds, like a rainstorm in the distance, slowly getting nearer by the second.
Bringing to mind the likes of Bon Iver and Japanese House, the mellow, chilled-out vibe to the song succeeds in delivering the perfect soundtrack for late night drives and quiet moments of contemplation.
The artist sheds further meaning to the single, sharing, “When you are overcome with the feeling that you just know how things are going to work out—when you can see it and touch it—that insight can bring both excitement and calm, but also a rather sinister sense of inevitably.”
With more music slated for release this year, The Auxiliary is heading for a bright future.
