After teasing new music for much of the past week, CHVRCHES made good on it and released their new song "He Said She Said."
The new track arrived Monday afternoon and it marks their first since their 2018 album Love Is Dead. The new single, which is out now via Glassnote Records, was recorded almost entirely remotely with the trio split on different sides of the Atlantic.
“Like everyone, I’ve had a lot of time to think and reflect over the past year," says frontwoman Lauren Mayberry. "To examine experiences I had previously glossed over or deeply buried. I feel like I have spent a lot of my life (personally and professionally) performing the uncomfortable balancing act that is expected of women and it gets more confusing and exhausting the older I get."
She continues: "'He Said She Said' is my way of reckoning with things I’ve accepted that I know I shouldn’t have ... All the verse lines are tongue-in-cheek or paraphrased versions of things that have actually been said to me by men in my life. Being a woman is fucking exhausting and it felt better to scream it into a pop song than scream it into the void. After the past year, I think we can all relate to feeling like we're losing our minds.”
After touring in support of Love Is Dead through 2019, the band had intended to dive deep into crafting their next record. But they ended up self-isolating, with Mayberry and Martin Doherty in Los Angeles while bandmate Iain Cook was back home in Glasgow. Through video calls and swapping audio files, they began working on new music anyway. "He Said She Said" is the first preview.
