Mat Kearney has returned with new music, a sign of more material to come.

On Friday, he shared his pensive new single "Grand Canyon," which is out now via Tomorrow Music/Caroline. A song about feeling disconnected from someone you care about, it was recorded entirely in quarantine with Kearney's longtime production collaborator Robert Marvin, whose work also includes music by Tove Lo and Kelly Clarkson.

“I think we all can relate to the feeling of being disconnected from people in this season," says Kearney. "‘Grand Canyon’ was written about wanting to connect to someone close to you, but feeling like they’re a mile away. A lot of my new songs were written on one fateful writing trip to Joshua Tree to reconnect with my singer-songwriter roots. ‘Grand Canyon’ took on a life of its own—the song felt sexy and earthy with a lot of yearning. I’ve never put 808s and pedal steel guitar on the same song.”

According to Kearney, this new track is only the first of several. He's been hard at work on a new album while in isolation with his family, which includes his newborn daughter, born earlier this year.
