On Friday, Mikael Temrowski (aka Quinn XCII) released his third studio album A Letter to My Younger Self, which is very clearly a personal project for the Detroit artist.

It's very nostalgic and relatable, even from the very first track "Am I High Rn," a collaboration with blackbear which is literally about "being high for the first time and dealing with the feelings of paranoia, excitement, worry,” says Quinn.

The new project expands on his 2019 release From Michigan With Love and showcases an even more direct ability to be vulnerable and write about some of his most personal experiences and relationships, the confusion of a hopeless crush in "Stacy" and having to let go of relationships in "Meeting Strangers."

But while the album is very youthful and nostalgic, constantly nodding to Quinn XCII's past and younger days, with playful and carefree lyrics, it also demonstrates a new level of maturity and honesty which towers over the entire project, which also features collaborations with Marc E. Bassy and Logic. 

“The message I want to get across is to not beat yourself up too much when things in life aren’t going your way," says Quinn XCII of the new album. "In those moments, some things may seem like the most intense and important thing you’ll ever go through, but try to remember that it’s all just a very small chapter in a much greater life story.”

Even though this isn't a typical summer by any means, Quinn XCII's combination of lightheartedness, emotion and pain meshed with the joy of living in the moment and a reflectiveness on the old days makes for a great summer album.
