Stephen Babcock is preparing to release his sophomore album this fall, and this week, he is sharing new music.

The New York-based singer-songwriter will release his new single "Internet Friends" on Friday (May 6), but it's premiering today on Variance, offering an early glimpse of the track, which at first seems like a song about a failed relationship. But listening to the lyrics, it becomes apparent this is about a very 2022 "disaster" of a relationship, inspired by a friend's Instagram Influencer ex.

"The song is about my friend who moved in with his Instagram influencer girlfriend in L.A. during COVID," says Babcock about the new track. "Needless to say, that relationship fell apart because she cared more about her online presence than the relationship. The song is one of my favorites because it feels super relevant to this day and age. As everything becomes more digital post-COVID, the song is a tongue-in-cheek way to laugh about how our lives are essentially all lived online now."

Coincidentally, many of Babcock's fans have dubbed the singer the "internet dad" for his fatherly threads and relatable pop gems. His new material has a very Phoebe Bridgers, Holly Humberstone-esque sound to it, and we're thrilled to be sharing this new song.
