After spending much of the past year away, James Vincent McMorrow on Tuesday released a shiny new single called "Rising Water."

It's the first glimpse into the singer's upcoming third album We Move, which will arrive on Sept. 2.

Pointing to his "musical heroes" who candidly put their inner selves on display in their music, McMorrow recalled his own struggle to do so, explaining his tendency to lean on metaphors and imagery in order to blur any reflection of himself.

This time around, he says that "in every part of this new album I see myself. I hear it in every lyric and every note. And it’s still terrifying. But it’s exactly what I needed to make. Because I can’t be the person I want to be, or the musician I want to be, unless I pursue what I hear without hesitation."

Produced by Drake collaborator Nineteen85, "Rising Water" can be heard below, followed by McMorrow's newly announced fall tour dates.
