Showtime Planning Stephen Colbert Election Night Special

As this year's truly unconventional election season continues, Showtime is aiming to have Stephen Colbert host a live special on Nov. 8 while votes are being tallied.

The network shared the news Thursday during its panel at the Television Critics Association summer press tour, where CEO David Nevins cautioned that while it's not yet official, he's optimistic: “I think it’s gonna happen," he said.

"Stephen wants to do it. I want to do it. The studio wants to do it," Nevins revealed, adding: "He’s promised he will say a couple of curse words."

Because Colbert's Late Show on CBS won't be airing on Nov. 8 (due to election coverage), that would leave him open for the Showtime gig, allowing him to still provide commentary for what will likely be an interesting night.

As we previously reported, the Late Show saw significant ratings spike last month when it aired live episodes after the Republican and Democratic conventions.
