While grandson has been offering samples of his new album for weeks, today the full album is finally here.
I Love You, I'm Trying arrived today via Fueled By Ramen, and for fans picking up on his evolving sound, it probably won't come as much as a surprise that it certainly stands in contrast to some of grandson's previous work, veering from political and social commentary to an inward-looking, very solemn new project.
The new record is said to come from a place of surrender: "A surrender to control the narrative. It’s a deep dive into the psyche of a fragile, oft-emotionally unstable and yet wildly creative force." It's grandson like we've never heard him before, and it's a welcome listen.
"'Half My Heart' captures the feeling of when you get in the way of your own happiness,” says grandson of the song which appears on the new album. “I was going through a lot of personal shit with my mental health and wondering how much of it is about growing up and out of it, and how much is about accepting and learning to live with your faults, and how to still show up for your partner when you can barely show up for yourself."
He continues: "Sonically, I worked with my old friend Mike Shinoda and had my girlfriend Wafia sing background vocals with him. The song draws on my love for modern alt like Dominic Fike, Kacey Musgraves, Joji, Deb Never, Mac Miller.”
This new album comes ahead of grandson's new North American tour, which kicks off next week in San Diego.
