John Legend on Friday released his new album, simply titled Legend.

The Grammy-winning singer had been teasing the new record for months, but now it's here, out via Republic Records. And even more stunning, it's a story told in two acts, according to Legend, who separates "Act I" into what is described as the "vividly the worldly, sensual pleasures of Saturday night," brimming with lust, sex and adventure, in contrast with "Act II," which is dubbed as "Sunday morning," sharing glimpses of healing, intimacy and commitment.

The album features a number of guest appearances from Ty Dolla $ign, Jazmine Sullivan, Rick Ross, J.I.D, Jhené Aiko, Amber Mark and more.

“I never feel divorced from my ancestors,” says Legend of the new record. “I have such reverence for my musical heritage, that I don’t feel like I need to leave it behind to be adventurous, or creative, or to try something new. When I’m creating something new, I’m still hearing the voices and influences of Stevie, Marvin, Curtis, Aretha, Nina, Donny and Prince."

He continues: "Black musicians have always been at the forefront of innovation in music. But where I think hip hop is always about what’s new, with soul music, we are a bit more nostalgic … and hopefully what we’ve been able to do with Legend is that synthesis of looking forward, but also connecting with where we come from.”
