There's been a lot said about the idea of "purposeful pop." We don't have time to debate 2017 again. I mean, have you experienced the last year and a half??

But that brings us to this week and the arrival of FLETCHER's new single "Healing." At its core, it's definitely a big, shiny pop song. It has an irresistible hook, a nod to co-writers like Scott Harris and ALDAE, whose recent work includes collaborations with Khalid and Justin Bieber, respectively.

Beyond that, however, the song is poetic, as FLETCHER candidly speaks about her downfalls, her weakness, her struggles, and reclaiming her inner strength. She doesn't then wrap everything in a bow and suggest, "problem solved!" Instead, she declares: "The smoke ain't gone, but it's clearing / I ain't there yet, but I'm healing."

Those two lines sound so simple, but there's something so honest and pure about hearing that kind of lyricism on a track which doesn't deny it's a pop song. It's not trying to be something else or play any tricks. It's a song by a human in the middle of a very hard yet relatable journey, and there's tremendous power in that.

“I’ve spent my whole life looking for answers on how to be better — emotionally, physically, mentally, spiritually, intellectually,” says FLETCHER. “I thought, ‘If I can just figure out the secret, all my problems will be solved.’ As if everyone had the fix but me. Between different relationships, doctors, healers, crystals, self-help books, medications, podcasts, you name it, I sought it out."

She continues: "All my value was placed externally. And though those things have guided me on my journey and led me to where I am now, the thing I was missing was right in front of me. My own strength and love and soul has always been there, but I couldn’t see that. This song is the foundation of what’s to come…an era of healing…and feeling myself for the first time ever."
