Emerging singer-producer Khushi is heading into the weekend with the release of his debut solo album Strange Seasons. And it's a good one.
Sure, there's plenty of new music out this week, but the London artist, who is one-third of Variance favorite Strong Asian Mothers, shared his own LP on Friday and it's worth a listen. The 10-track project was actually mixed by none of than James Blake.
"I tried to find the most direct way to present the songs, with the arrangements building up when they needed to but being at their most simple and stripped down elsewhere," he says of the album, which was largely recorded in a shed in London over about six years. "I spent many long nights and days in the shed—it was a long but eventually deeply rewarding and emotional process."
He says Blake had heard and "fallen in love" with the record and offered to mix it, inviting Khushi to his home studio where they mixed the album together. Their time in the studio also led to further collaboration, with Khushi contributing to Blake's album Assume Form, released almost exactly a year ago, in addition to opening for Blake's tour in support of that record.
"This album is my entire heart and soul," says Khushi of the album. "It is the end of a very long journey and the start of a new one. I hope you enjoy it."
The record is simply outstanding. And it's definitely one of those you want to sit with and soak in without distractions, rather than play in the background while you do other things.
