Though the sleek Fiserv Forum was built for the Milwaukee Bucks, it has been the wealth of musical talent that’s been booked in its inaugural season that has drawn praise. The first of three consecutive shows before the Bucks take to the hardwood later this week, Metallica brought the fall leg of the WorldWired Tour to Milwaukee for a sold-out show. The Foo Fighters, Eagles and twenty one pilots round out an incredibly strong week of concerts.

Moving indoors to arenas—versus the massive stadium trek this past summer during the first leg of the tour—offered a much more intimate setting for the in-the-round performance. The power attack, led by front man James Hetfield, guitarist Kirk Hammett, bassist Robert Trujillo and drummer Lars Ulrich, was coupled with timely pyrotechnics, abundant lighting, dynamic video cubes and choreographed drones that all contributed to the massive production value.

Laden with heavy cuts from their strongest release in decades, Hardwired…to Self-Destruct, there was still plenty of room for old-school favorites during a set that exceeded two hours. The driven “Seek & Destroy,” “Creeping Death,” “For Whom the Bell Tolls” and “Motorbreath” anchored the night, while Trujillo offered a respectful nod to founding bassist Cliff Burton on “(Anesthesia) Pulling Teeth."

If there was a disappointment on the night, it was seeing visual evidence of Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl and Taylor Hawkins hanging backstage without a guest appearance. However, it’s just yet another reason to head back to Fiserv for a second helping of hard rock in as many nights.
