Photo of Jennifer Hudson in 'The Color Purple,' by Joseph Marzullo

Just hours after Prince's death on Thursday, Jennifer Hudson and the cast of Broadway's The Color Purple honored the Purple One with an emotional and rather gripping cover of "Purple Rain."

"We lost a legend," Hudson told the crowd during Thursday night's curtain call, explaining "we want to keep him alive today with his songs."

Led by Hudson and Cynthia Erivo (Celie), the cast delivered a passionate rendition of the Prince hit before ditching the instruments and asking the audience to join in.

With Coachella and various other shows scheduled for this weekend, there will certainly be plenty of Prince covers in the coming days. But this one is a must-watch.

See it below (beware of tears).
