Carrie Fisher, the actress best known for her iconic role of Princess Leia Organa in the Star Wars film franchise, has died after suffering a heart attack. She was 60.

Her spokesman on Tuesday released a statement: “It is with a very deep sadness that [Fisher's daughter] Billie Lourd confirms that her beloved mother Carrie Fisher passed away at 8:55 this morning. She was loved by the world and she will be missed profoundly. Our entire family thanks you for your thoughts and prayers.”

As we previously reported, Fisher went into cardiac arrest after a flight from London to Los Angeles last Friday. She was taken to a nearby hospital, we she remained her passing. 

In addition to the Star Wars franchise, Fisher also appeared in such films as Austin Powers, The Blues Brothers, Charlie's Angels, Hannah and Her Sisters, Scream 3 and When Harry Met Sally...

Fisher was also a best-selling author. Her 1987 novel Postcards From the Edge went on to become a film starring Shirley MacLaine and Meryl Streep. In her new autobiography The Princess Diarist, she revealed she and co-star Harrison Ford had an affair on the Star Wars set.

The daughter of actress Debbie Reynolds and singer Eddie Fisher, she is survived by her mother, her own daughter Billie and her brother Todd Fisher.
