Swedish DJ-producer Tim Bergling (aka Avicii) has died.

"It is with profound sorrow that we announce the loss of Tim Bergling, also known as Avicii," his publicist said in a statement on Friday afternoon. "He was found dead in Muscat, Oman this Friday afternoon local time, April 20th. The family is devastated and we ask everyone to please respect their need for privacy in this difficult time. No further statements will be given."

Avicii emerged as an EDM standout back in 2011 with his hit "Levels," followed by his Aloe Blacc collaboration "Wake Me Up" two years later.

Following the release of his 2013 album True and 2015 followup Stories, the producer said he would retire from touring in 2016. "Let’s make them go out with a bang," he said at the time in a letter to fans.

He added: "My choices and career have never been driven by material things, although I’m grateful for all the opportunities and comforts my success has availed me. I know I am blessed to be able to travel all around the world and perform, but I have too little left for the life of a real person behind the artist."

He had previously struggled with alcohol addiction as well as a number of health problems, which had forced him to cancel several shows in 2014. Earlier that same year, he was hospitalized due to gallbladder surgery.
