Could Justin Timberlake's big Super Bowl halftime show be accompanied by new music? It's quite possible.
As TMZ points out, the singer has recently filed a pair of curious trademarks: the phrase "Man of the Woods," which is intended for CDs, DVDs, downloadable music, clothing, concert posters and tours; as well as "Fresh Leaves," which would be used mostly for apparel such as hats, robes, shorts, jerseys and long-sleeved t-shirts.
While it's unclear exactly how Timberlake would use those trademarks, the news comes just weeks before he takes the stage at Super Bowl LII, which is set for Feb. 4 at the U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis.
Super Bowl halftime shows are generally considered among the top promo opportunities for musicians, with more than 100 million viewers usually tuning in for the performance.
Timberlake's last album was 2013's The 20/20 Experience, but he is believed to have spent much of the past two years in and out of the studio with Timbaland and Pharrell working on new music. Following more rootsy performances at the Charlottesville benefit concert and alongside Chris Stapleton, some have speculated a blues or country-leaning record could be on the horizon.
As we reported last fall, Timberlake said his new material "punches you between the eyes," while Pharrell suggested the new album would give the "SexyBack" singer a chance to step outside of the "pop star" world and show more of his "vulnerability."
It's worth noting, trademark applications can be filed months (or even years) ahead of their initial use, allowing for plenty of time for approval, assuming there are no complications. It is generally a six-month process, perhaps suggesting even if the full record isn't out by the Super Bowl, an album and possibly a tour could soon follow.
A rep for Timberlake wasn't immediately available to respond to a request for comment.
