And just like that, House of Cards is ending.

Hours after news broke of actor Anthony Rapp's accusations of sexual advances against Kevin Spacey, Netflix is planning for the upcoming sixth season of House of Cards to be its last.

Production had already begun on the upcoming installment and it wasn't immediately clear if plans were already in place for season 6 to mark the end of the series, which has been a staple for Netflix as it made its push into original programming.

Following Rapp's allegations on Sunday that Spacey made a pass at him at 14, which prompted Spacey to subsequently apologize while denying any wrongdoing, then coming out as gay, arguably in an attempt to deflect attention from the controversy.

It's worth noting, House of Cards' glory days had long been over, despite continued popularity with viewers. Critical acclaim had declined in recent seasons and as we previously mentioned, its sole Emmy win this year was for Music Composition.

After this story was originally published, Media Rights Capital and Netflix released a statement regarding the allegations against Spacey.

"Media Rights Capital and Netflix are deeply troubled by last night’s news concerning Kevin Spacey," the companies said in a joint statement. "In response to last night’s revelations, executives from both of our companies arrived in Baltimore this afternoon to meet with our cast and crew to ensure that they continue to feel safe and supported. As previously scheduled, Kevin Spacey is not working on set at this time.”

Filming for season 6 of House of Cards started three weeks ago in Maryland. A premiere date for the new episodes has yet to be announced, but season 5 premiered on May 30, later than previous seasons.
