Donald Glover Says Continuing Childish Gambino Would Be Like a Bad Third Sequel

Donald Glover says he's retiring his Childish Gambino persona rather than risking an unnecessary "third sequel."

“There’s nothing worst than like a third sequel, like a third movie and we’re like, ‘again?’” Glover said in a new interview with Huffington Post, reaffirming his decision to walk away from the musical moniker. “You know, I like it when something’s good and when it comes back, there’s a reason to come back, there’s a reason to do that.”

He also explained his view that Gambino is about "being punk," and carrying on for too long would comprise that.

“I feel like there’s gotta be a reason to do things and I always had a reason to be punk,” he said. “Being punk just always felt really good to me and we always looked at ‘Atlanta’ as a punk show and I feel like the direction I would go with Childish Gambino wouldn’t be punk anymore. As much as ‘Redbone’ is a punk song because it’s a gospel song that’s on the radio, I’m like there’s only so far you can go before you just are the radio.”

Glover caused a stir over the weekend in New York when he closed out his sole 2017 performance at Governors Ball Music Festival, telling fans as he exited the stage, "I'll see you for the last Gambino album!"

While his definitive confirmation will likely be unwelcome by many fans, it isn't completely surprising news, as Glover said in 2015 he saw Gambino as a "period of my art time," adding: "I feel like Childish Gambino is a period that should come to a close. I like endings.”

On the bright side, he did say he has one final album. There's just no word when that project will arrive.
