Jay Z on Wednesday afternoon responded to news he will be the first rapper inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
"This is a win for US," he tweeted today from his sparsely used Twitter account. "I remember when rap was said to be a fad. We are now alongside some of the greatest writers in history."
The Hall of Fame earlier today announced its inductees, with Jay Z as the first hip-hop artist in its 38-year history. He will join fellow Swedish hitmaker Max Martin; Motown founder Berry Gordy; The Time's Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis; Chicago's Robert Lamm, James Pankow and Peter Cetera; and Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds.
Asked about rap's absence from the Songwriters Hall of Fame during the inductees announcement on CBS This Morning, Nile Rodgers explained that "even though [Jay Z has] had more pop albums than anyone else," his efforts were generally overlooked "because he did it through rap, which isn't considered part of the normal pop music scene."
The Songwriters Hall of Fame induction ceremony is set for June 15 in New York City.
