The Chainsmokers have held on to the No. 1 spot on the U.S. charts for a stunning 12th consecutive week, possibly indicating Hillary Clinton may win Tuesday's election.
As Variance previously noted, we recently analyzed chart data and found new No. 1 songs (two weeks or less) on the last chart rankings announced pre-election tend to favor the non-incumbent candidate, while older songs (more than two weeks at No. 1) favor the party currently in the White House.
Of the elections since the Billboard Hot 100 chart began in 1958, 10 out of 14 (or 71%) have proven the rule of the incumbent versus the non-incumbent No. 1, including both of President Obama's electoral wins.
While this formula is not scientific, it's worth noting RealClearPolitics as of Tuesday had the former secretary of state's lead in an average of national polls at 3.3 points, up from 1.7 last Thursday.
Nate Silver's FiveThirtyEight last week had Clinton's chances of winning at 69.1% to Donald Trump's 30.9%. Today (Nov. 8), the forecast stands at 71.4% to 28.6% in her favor.
Until the actual election results come in later tonight, it's unknown how accurate this data will be this time around, especially in such an unpredictable and bizarre campaign.
