After less than one day at the box office, Suicide Squad is aiming for a record-breaking opening weekend, perhaps exceeding studio projections.
Despite some brutally awful reviews, the supervillain flick hasn't had much trouble filling seats and is now tracking toward a tally of $140 million in North America through Sunday.
That number would easily surpass Guardians of the Galaxy's August opening record of $94.3 million in 2014. According to Fandango, it's already beat that film's pre-order numbers to become the top August pre-seller in the company's 16-year history.
Suicide Squad boasts a might cast including the likes of Will Smith, Jared Leto, Margot Robbie, Viola Davis, Joel Kinnaman, Jai Courtney, Ike Barinholtz, Scott Eastwood and Cara Delevingne, which is likely helping drive audience numbers up.
As of this writing, the film has a 26% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, although the audience score is much higher at 74%.
Update: By Saturday evening, Suicide Squad is now on track to exceed the $140 million mark.
