It's been nearly a month since True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto predicted a season 2 cast announcement was due "in the next week," but it appears the HBO drama is one step closer to a reveal.

Deadline is reporting Vince Vaughn is being sought for a lead role as the villain, with rumored mob ties. And although negotiations are not yet in progress, the character was apparently written "with Vaughn in mind."

Details regarding the upcoming season remain limited, but as we previously reported, Colin Farrell and Taylor Kitsch have also been in discussions for two lead roles alongside a female lead, whose identity is still largely a mystery.

Shooting for season 2 begins next month, so it's likely an official announcement is not too far away.

According to The Wrap, Mad Men's Elisabeth Moss is in the running for a female lead. The site also reveals the new season of True Detective will follow three law enforcement officers from different cities investigating the death of a corrupt city manager named Ben Caspar. The detectives "soon discover their investigation has much broader and darker implications than they initially thought."
